If you’ve been following the hype around Subaru’s latest project, then you know the all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent was finally unveiled at the LA Auto Show this month. Subie fanatics everywhere have been waiting for the highly-anticipated SUV for some time now, as it’s Subaru’s biggest and most advanced vehicle yet. Now that it’s out there, we want to highlight some of the key takeaways from the LA Auto Show unveiling.
It’s furry-family friendly.
In true Subaru fashion, the Ascent was unveiled with a little help from some furry friends. The Barkleys, a family of 8 who you may recognize from some of Subaru’s video advertisements, “drove” the car up and then filed out onto the stage — including “little guy,” the puppy of the group. This tells us two things. First it tells us that the Ascent can seat up to 8 passengers, which is pretty impressive. It also tells us that adorable puppies approve of the new car, which is all we really needed to know in the first place.
It has a new 2.4-liter turbo engine.
The Ascent’s new engine is an all-new Direct-Injection Turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine. The engine delivers 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Ascent has 19.3 gallons of fuel capacity too, so Subaru’s newest SUV makes it easier than ever to reach your destination. That’s what we like to hear.
The interior is spacious & comfortable.
Subaru introduced a really great family car option with the Ascent. The interior is big enough for the whole family (as we saw with the Barkleys), and it’s comfortable and versatile too. It has up to 153.3 cubic feet of passenger volume, along with tons of cargo space including underfloor storage. The rear doors open extra wide so everyone can climb in and out with ease, and the 19 cupholders ensure that no passenger will ever have to go thirsty. All three rows of seating are wrapped in high-quality materials that look premium, feel luxurious, and last through all the movement and messes.
It can tow a lot.
Actually, it can tow more than any other Subaru ever made. The 2019 Subaru Ascent offers a 5,000-pound towing capacity! Whoa. It also offers an available Class III trailer hitch and a wide selection of Thule racking accessories, so you can pack up all the gear you’ll need for all the adventures you’re planning to go on. It’s kind of perfect.
It’s super safe.
Obviously, we don’t have all the testing results yet to compare to other vehicles in its segment — but Subaru seems pretty confident about how the Ascent is going to score. Subaru fully expects the Ascent to achieve the best-possible ratings in every Insurance Institute for Highway Safety test, including forward collision warning, headlight and child seat fitment tests. It has all the latest in-vehicle safety technology of course, like EyeSight Driver Assist, which is featured as a standard feature for the first time in the Ascent.
It’s coming soon.
The all-new 2019 Ascent is expected to arrive in Subaru stores sometime early next summer, so we won’t have to wait much longer! Subaru hasn’t announced a price yet, but it’s likely to start around the low $30,000s. Compared to other mid-size SUVs, that sounds like a steal to us.
