Road trip season is nearly here. You've probably been planning out all of the great destinations you're going to visit with your family and friends, but have you planned for all of those hours you will be spending in the car?
Young children get notoriously fidgety on long road trips, but anyone can start to get restless after a few hours of being cooped up in a car. Here are some fun and engaging things to help you pass the time on a road trip.
- Play a car game. Road trip classics include I spy, 20 Questions, and Hangman. These are great for any age.
- Spin a yarn. Swap stories or make one up together. One person starts the story off, and then you just pass it along like a hot potato.
- Make a Mad Lib. Mad Libs are a series of little paper books that guide groups of players to fill in the blanks of a story without the context. The result is a hilarious and surprising story. There’s also an app, which makes Mad Libs super convenient.
- Start a mobile book club. With all of that time you might as well knock out some reading. Pass a book around, or bring your own. An audio book is a good alternative that the whole car can enjoy together.
- Listen to a podcast. Younger children might not enjoy this one, but adults will enjoy learning something new from a podcast.
- Fill in a crossword puzzle. Again, this might not be a kid’s top pick, but working together on a crossword can be a fun way for adults and older kids to soak up time.
- What’s in my pocket? Share some riddles. Everyone loves a good stumper.
- Would you rather… Sit in the hot seat with some tough hypothetical choices. This is a great way to pass the time and learn more about your fellow travelers.
- Be the tour guide. Learn some fun facts about the places you will be passing through on your trip, and share that knowledge with the car.
