Every year, Consumer Reports puts out a list of the best cars and SUVs to own. Unlike some other lists that are chosen by preference, or simply by drawing names out of a hat, the Consumer Reports Top 10 Picks list is determined by thoroughly testing vehicles.
The Consumer Reports list isn't some throwaway popularity contest. Having a catchy name or a nice paint job isn't enough to earn a car a spot. The vehicles that were named to the list were put through their paces, and tested in a number of categories including performance, reliability, and safety. Some might say that Subaru had an unfair advantage considering Subaru's reputation for performance, reliability, and safety.
For a vehicle to be awarded a spot on the Top 10 Picks list, it must outdo all other vehicles in those combined three categories. Vehicles are tested and given an overall score.
This year, Subaru was the belle of the ball, earning three of the ten spots on the Top 10 Picks of 2015 list. The 2015 Subaru Legacy took the midsize category, the 2015 Subaru Impreza took the compact category, and the 2015 Subaru Forester took the small SUV category.
It’s an impressive feat for a car manufacturer to claim so many spots on such a competitive list. Subaru was awarded nearly a third of the available spots, and that accomplishment is even more impressive when you consider how small Subaru is. The three spots on the Top 10 Picks list make up nearly half of Subaru’s entire lineup if you're not counting individual editions and model variations.
- The Impreza earned an overall test score of 79, and received a 4 out of 5 in reliability. Its 27 mpg was the highest of the three Subarus on the list.
- The Legacy earned an impressive test score of 89, and also earned a 4 out of 5 in reliability. The Legacy received the highest test score out of the three Subarus.
- The Forester notched a test score of 86, and a perfect 5 out of 5 on reliability. Not only was this the highest reliability out of the three Subarus, but it was among the highest for the entire list!
