What do you know about the Subaru WRX? If your answer is, "It's fast, and it wins a lot of races because it's fast," you're not alone. The WRX has a reputation for speed and performance, especially when compared to the rest of the Subaru lineup, but there's more to the WRX than flat out speed. Like all Subaru vehicles, the WRX is also incredibly safe and great for families.
Safety isn’t the first thing that comes to mind with a car that has a 268 horsepower engine that can go from zero to sixty in five seconds (according to Car and Driver), but the WRX is one of the safest sedans out there. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Subaru WRX the best possible score in every category for crashworthiness, and a Top Safety Pick Rating.
Although safety is an important factor when choosing a family vehicle, there's also the matter of space. While maybe not as well suited to be a family vehicle as say the Forester or the Outback, the WRX can certainly fill in as a reliable family vehicle. The 4-door Sedan is often grouped with tiny, uncomfortable sports cars because of its blistering speed and powerful engine, but the WRX has a comfortable and spacious cabin with plenty of cargo room to boot.
But for most WRX owners, safety and plenty of room are just added bonuses. The real appeal of the car continues to be the incredible performance. Since the WRX was introduced in 1992, it has proceeded to gobble up world records and rally trophies left and right. Although those titles have been earned with STi tuning, the WRX certainly doesn't lack in the power department.
The 2016 WRX is set to be released later this year with new safety and convenience features as well as even more interior room.
