Portland, Oregon is known for being a generally pleasant place. It's also known for harboring an abundance of mustaches and lots and lots of Subarus.

As you may know, men with mustaches are typically villains in films from the silent movie era. Portland being a haven for silent movie villains could be one possible explanation for the large number of Subaru vehicles that have been stolen in and around the city of Portland.

Portland is sometimes referred to as Subaru City, because it's one of the most popular car brands in the area. Subaru isn't only popular with car owners in the area, but with car thieves as well. It's the third most frequently stolen vehicle in the city, after Honda and Toyota. It kind of makes sense that Honda and Toyota would top the list. They are super common, Toyota is the world's largest selling vehicle manufacturer, and Honda comes in at the number eight spot. While Subaru has been gaining popularity nationally and globally, it's by no means as common or unassuming as the other two brands.

The Subaru models being targeted are older models dating from the 90s to early 2000s. It seems that these vehicles are being targeted because they are surprisingly easy to steal. If you live in a place like Northwest Arkansas that has a low crime rate, you might not have to worry getting your vehicle stolen; however if you live in a bigger city like Portland, or an area with a high crime rate, auto theft is something you have to be mindful of. If you drive an older Subaru, consider trading it in for a new one, or making efforts to increase your vehicle's security system.

In all likelihood, Portland, Oregon is not chock full of silent movie villains. Carjackers probably just recognize a well-made vehicle when they see it.
