October is Adopt-a-Dog Month. Subaru vehicles have long been known as a top choice for dog owners. If you’ve been thinking about getting a dog, this is definitely the month to do it!

The American Humane Society started Adopt-a-Dog back in 1981 with the intention of saving dogs lives. It’s estimated that there are 3 to 4 million shelter animals each year that are never adopted and have to be euthanized. October is the official month to go to your local animal shelter and adopt a dog.

Sometimes people are put off by the idea of getting a dog from the animal shelter. There are often misconceptions that people believe to be true. Here are just a few reasons you should consider adopting a dog for the animal shelter.

  •  You're saving a life. By rescuing a dog from the animal shelter, you’re ensuring that at least one dog isn’t put down due to lack of funding or overcrowding.
  • People sometimes shy away from shelters because they want a pure bred dog. According to The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, 25% of dogs that enter animal shelters are purebred.
  •   There's the assumption that a dog in a shelter has had a hard life and won’t be good with people. While some dogs that are in shelters have been neglected or abused, many have led perfectly happy lives and will be quite friendly.
  •   Another misconception is that dogs in a shelter will be poorly trained or misbehave. Many dogs enter animal shelters already trained, and are very obedient.
  • Adopted dogs can have tons of character.
  •  You can save money by adopting a dog rather than spending a boatload of cash at a pet store or breeder.
  •   If you’ve ever read, or heard, anything about puppy mills, you know that they are awful places that profit at the dogs' expense. By adopting a dog, you’re not supporting those mills.
  • Dogs love Subarus!
