The results are in and the all-new 2015 WRX has received a
Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. It’s no
surprise when the Impreza also received the same accolade and the WRX is based
on the same body with some differences that warrant a separate testing. The WRX performed well in all of the different tests that IIHS uses to rate vehicles.
The IIHS tested the WRX for the first time ever with the new 2015 model because there are enough differences between the 2015 WRX and the 2015 Impreza that the two models might have performed differently in crashes. In years past, the safety elements of the Impreza and WRX were so similar that the IIHS did not test the WRX separately for crash data. However, the 2015 WRX performed just as well as the Impreza in the tests -- and better than many other vehicles in its class.
The IIHS uses four tests:
- small overlap front
- moderate overlap front
- side
- roof strength
Some of the tests are quantified to allow the tested car to be compared to other types of vehicles. The WRX is as safe as large SUVs with Good ratings in side crashes and roof strength tests, even though it is a much smaller vehicle.
