Choosing the right transmission for your new Subaru WRX or WRX STI all comes down to how your vehicle fits into your life. The first step to finding the right transmission for you is to really give some honest thought to how you’ll use the car most often and what kind of performance you want out of the vehicle.

For those looking for a practical car for the road, not the racetrack, the CVT is probably the better bet out of the two transmissions.  In a recent review of the two transmissions, the reviewers at The Car Connection noted that the CVT is quieter, gets better gas mileage for highway driving, and still fakes an 8 speed pretty well.

On the other end of the spectrum with the manual 6-speed WRX, you can get more control out of your car when you need it but that depends a lot on knowing how to use manual gears well. If you’re up on how to best use manual gears -- or you anticipate learning -- a manual can be a fun option for your WRX. Engine braking makes downshifts faster for track days and stronger launches help you get off the line quicker. If you’re only doing track days once in a great while though, it might not be worth putting up with a manual for in-town driving and long road trips.

No matter what you decide, the best way to know is by testing out both transmissions and seeing which you like better. Come to Adventure Subaru and drive for yourself.
