Consumer Reports has decided on the year’s top picks for new vehicles. Known as the most comprehensive and discerning reviewers in the car industry, Consumer Reports does a lot more than just take a car out on the track and look at third-party test data. Consumer Reports takes apart cars and looks at thousands of records for reliability and repair costs on top of fuel economy and features. When you’re buying a car, new or used, using Consumer Reports’ data is a great way to get a fantastic car.

Subaru did very well in this year’s picks, nabbing both the top compact car category with the 2014 Subaru Impreza and the small SUV category with 2014 Subaru Forester. The Forester is a new addition to the top Consumer Report picks, knocking out other manufacturers' SUVs. The Impreza has been among the top picks before -- it already has a great track record with the reviewers at Consumer Reports. So what exactly did they like so much about both cars to make them the top vehicles in their classes?

The Impreza, with tons of features usually only found on more expensive vehicles, gives you a lot of bang for your buck. With all-wheel drive and great safety ratings, the Impreza also has a comfortable ride and a surprisingly roomy interior for a small car. Subaru didn’t sacrifice safety to make the car more comfortable, nor did they lighten the load to get great gas mileage, even with an all-wheel drive system.

The Forester is new to the top of the pack because of the 2014 redesign. Larger interior space, bigger windows for easier visibility, and bigger doors make the Forester easy to drive and comfortable to ride in. It has the best visibility in the small SUV class by a significant amount and that makes driving safer than in other vehicles. It has a class-leading 26 mph overall on top of an impeccable all-wheel drive system for a bit of fun or safe driving in subpar conditions.

It makes sense to do your homework when you're thinking about purchasing a new vehicle—it’s a big decision. You can feel comfortable buying an Impreza or Forester when the toughest critics put them well above the rest.
