Taking your Subaru out to a remote spot is one of the great pleasures of summer. You don't want a breakdown out here, though. Fortunately, it's not likely when you're driving a Subaru. Make sure you don't have problems by checking your oil between service appointments.
You need to bring your Subaru in to Adventure Subaru every 7,500 miles. That can be a long time. Now that recommended service dates are farther apart, you should check your oil. Some drivers think that checking the oil is only required if they have an oil leak. However, some oil is used in normal driving.
Here are some things that cause engine oil to be used up faster:
- engine braking -- shifting down to slow down your Subaru
- lots of highway driving
- lots of driving on hilly roads, of which we have plenty here in Northwest Arkansas
- driving in stop and go traffic
- idling for a long time, perhaps while waiting to pick up kids at school
- very hot weather, which is coming up
- very cold weather... not so much of an issue for us in Northwest Arkansas, but something to be aware of when you travel
If your car's oil gets used up, there may not be enough oil for proper functioning. Oil protects your engine. Driving with too little oil can damage your engine.
It's easy to check your oil. Just insert the dipstick when your Subaru is cold (not right after you stop driving). Pull it out and check both sides. If the oil reaches the fill line on one side but not on the other, or if it's low on both sides, top up your oil.
That's all there is to it.
Be sure to come back to Adventure Subaru for regular servicing! With proper care, your Subaru will take you on a lot of adventures.
