Buying a car can be a bit overwhelming. It's a big purchase, and one that shouldn’t be rushed into. You’re making a decision that will last for years and cost a lot of money; you want to make sure you are choosing the vehicle that is right for you.

If you have no idea where to start, CarMax has a vehicle recommendation tool that can help.

The recommendation tool stars with questions about usage. It asks you things like whether you plan on hauling gear, commuting to work or school, taking road trips, the number of passengers you will be driving, and the like which you then rate on a scale from most important to least important.

Unless your name is Michael Jordan, price is probably an important factor in buying a car. The CarMax recommendation tool lets you set a minimum and a maximum price range that will limit your search to show only the vehicles you can afford.

The next option you select is the model year. Rather than choosing an exact year, you are given a number of sliders with 1,2,3,5, and 7 years old. You can position these sliders anywhere between undesirable, neutral, and desirable. This gives more depth for your search results. You might not want all the miles of an older car, but at the same time you might not want to check the price tag of a newer one. The sliders give you the in-between options.

The next option is vehicle model, which of course should be Subaru. But in addition to selecting which model you prefer, you can select how open you are to the suggestion of other brands. One end of the slider says, “I will look at nothing other than Subaru!” while the other end says, “I am willing to entertain the possibility of buying vehicle that is not Subaru!”

After you pick the brand you get to dial your search in based on the model. Your options range from convertible to pickup and everything in between. The nice thing here is that you can select multiple models if you aren’t sure exactly what you want. After you select model you again have the option to hone your search. If you select the wagon option you can then slide your preference among 3-door, 5-door, small, and mid-size.

You can even select the specifications for your vehicle, anything from drive type, transmission, number of cylinders, engine type, fuel economy, towing, acceleration, passenger and trunk capacity. The nice part about this section is that it is very accessible. You don’t have to know a lot about cars to select your specification options.

The final option is selecting the importance of everything that you have entered so far. Whether you would rather lean more heavily towards the price, the year of the vehicle, the brand, or the model, Car Max will include that preference in its calculations.

The CarMax vehicle recommendation tool turns out to be pretty useful. It manages to be thorough without being tedious. Of course, it can’t offer you the same level of guidance or insight as we can at adventure Subaru, but it can help give you some car shopping ideas if you don’t know where to start. Then come on down and talk with us. We have used cars other than Subarus as well as used and pre-loved Subarus. We charge a single, fair price, we'll take your trade-in even if it's not a Subaru, and you'll find our people very helpful.
