What comes to mind when you think of science fiction? Probably something like artificially intelligent robots, aliens, or self-driving cars maybe. Well, Subaru is working to make one of those things a reality with Subaru EyeSight.
Subaru Eyesight is crazy. It’s what the engineers at Subaru call "Driver Assist Technology" and its purpose is to make Subaru vehicles some of the safest on the entire planet. It works by the cooperation of two cameras that process images from the front of the vehicle. Debris, the lines on the road, obstacles, other vehicles, whatever; the two cameras pick it up and process it.
The hi-tech system has features that address pretty much all the common driving dangers:
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Pre-collision Braking System
- Pre-collision Throttle Management
- Lane Departure and Sway Warning.
Adaptive Cruise Control is an especially cool feature. The two front-facing cameras read traffic to determine how fast or slow your Subaru can safely go. It will warn the driver and even brake if necessary to keep a safe distance from the vehicles in front of the car. You can even choose between 3 different following distances. Basically all you have to do is steer.
Subaru EyeSight was first offered last year with the 2014 Forester, Outback, and Legacy models and is offered with the same 2015 models. It’s a totally innovative and exciting addition to already innovative and exciting vehicles.
Those sci-fi movies you see with lead characters deeply contemplating the fate of the universe in the bucket seat of a self-driving car might become more fact than fiction if Subaru has anything to say about it. Right now the assisted driving technology available is basic but still very impressive. It’s only a matter of time before cars are completely capable of driving themselves!
