It’s official—there’s a new car you’ll want to test drive since its debut yesterday. With a sleek new look, the all-new 2015 Legacy brings a lot more to the table than previous generations. The new Legacy isn’t as in-your-face as the concept model but that’s to be expected with a production car. The pitched windshield that we saw in the teaser photos is as smooth as we hoped. The front grille is a nice addition to toughen up the appearance a bit. It’s what’s under the hood, however, that we’re most excited about.
The 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder gains a small 2 hp bump to 175 horsepower with 174 pound-feet of torque and the 3.6-liter Boxer engine remains the same. However, fuel economy is where you’ll see the most changes, with 26/36/30 miles per gallon city/highway/combined for the 2.5-liter. That’s a significant gain or 2/4/3 mpg, respectively, over previous Subaru Legacy models. With a 3.6-liter engine, you’ll see a nice improvement of 2/3/3 mpg to 20/28/23 mpg.
The interior of the Legacy is what makes this boost in mileage such an impressive feat. The Legacy is actually larger in the interior and the trunk for more comfort than previous years, which means there’s more car to power forward. Even still, Subaru is committed to doing better on previous mpg ratings and succeeded with the 2015 Legacy. As with all Subarus the all-wheel drive system is standard on the new Legacy as well as new Active Torque Vectoring to make turning even safer.
The two biggest complaints in the past were road noise and the outdated infotainment. Subaru has made many improvements to take care of those problems in the new Legacy. Engine mounts are now liquid-filled, the windshield is made of acoustic glass, and they increased the overall sound deadening throughout the entire car for a much quieter ride. The new infotainment system is now a 6.2-inch capacitive touchscreen or a 7.0-inch version with navigation and is much more intuitive than past generations. All new Legacy models benefit from a rearview camera for safety and other new safety features, including the optional EyeSight system.
