Industry insiders have recognized Subaru’s EyeSight System, available on the Outback, Legacy, and Forester, as the best collision avoidance system on the market. It even won top marks from IIHS as the only system that actually stopped the test vehicles in all tests. But Subaru doesn’t stop innovating and working towards safer designs just because we’re ahead of the pack. In Japan, Subaru has released a new update for the EyeSight System that will be reaching the American market on the 2015 models of the Outback and Legacy that will hit the market soon.

The first improvement to the EyeSight System is a better camera. With a 40-percent wider and longer range of visibility, the EyeSight System will be able to see ahead better to anticipate collisions even sooner. If you imagine putting on side blinders, you’ll understand why this is a huge improvement for the EyeSight System. Anticipation is the biggest tool that EyeSight uses to keep occupants safe and by expanding the time EyeSight has to anticipate a crash we’ll see better results. And that means more lives saved.

Another improvement is color detection. Red is an important color when driving—it means someone in front of you is slowing down or stopping or that it isn’t safe to cross and intersection. If EyeSight could identify red lights, it could predict traffic flow patterns more easily and anticipate when it needs to stop or slow down even more. If you’re using the adaptive cruise control, for example, being able to detect red lights on the car in front of you that’s slowing is yet another indicator to the EyeSight system that it’s time to slow down. Clearly, giving EyeSight the ability to recognize a red light would make a big difference. So that’s just what Subaru did.

Subaru’s goal is to keep all drivers and passengers safe, and the Subaru EyeSight System is doing just that. With these changes, Subaru says that it can bring a vehicle to a complete stop and avoid a crash at up to 31 MPH. We can’t wait to see the new EyeSight system in action when the new 2015 models arrive on our showroom floor.
