Hop in the all-new 2017 BRZ and check out this list of 6 beautiful drives that are sure to make your Sunday afternoon a memorable one.
1. Boston Mountain Scenic Loop
From Alma to Fayetteville, this 42 mile trip on US 71 is full of spectacular mountain views and quaint towns, with a collection of fun places to stop and explore along the way. Lake Fort Smith, a popular kayaking and hiking destination, is just a couple miles off the route. A few more miles up the main road and you’ll reach Artist Point and Saddle Canyon, where you can look through a telescope for a breathtaking view of the rolling hills.
2. Devil’s Den
With decades of history as a cherished natural landmark deep in the Ozarks, Devil’s Den State Park is a must for those looking to explore some of the beauty that the Natural State has to offer. Traveling from Fort Smith, one of the most scenic routes you can take is up through Cedarville on AR-59 and AR-220. Highway 220 eventually turns into North Lee Creek Road, which takes you alongside Lee Creek until you reach the park. Not only does the route take you through some of Arkansas’s quaint Ozark towns, it has a significant historical past -- this is the exact route the Butterfield Overland Stagecoach took to carry the first overland transcontinental mail through Arkansas from 1858-1861.
3. Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway
For 35 miles, this scenic trip on AR-21 takes you on a serene drive through the Ozark National Forest, eventually leading to the Buffalo River. The highway has some tight twists and turns, making it a great route to put the BRZ’s lightning-fast reflexes to the test. The byway begins about an hour from Fort Smith in Clarksville, but it is definitely worth the drive -- the scenery along the highway is incredible, and as the nation’s first National River, the Buffalo is not one to miss!
4. Arkansas’s Grand Canyon
Drive a little further east from the Ozark Highlands Scenic Byway and you’ll reach Scenic Byway 7, which ultimately leads to Arkansas’s stunning Grand Canyon. The highway offers beautiful mountainous views and a number of places to stop and gaze out at the scenery. Once you reach the Grand Canyon, you’ll want to stay a while to take it all in -- the overlook offers an utterly breathtaking panorama of the rolling hills and deep valleys of the Ozarks.
5. Mount Magazine
From Paris, this scenic byway leads you through the forests ascending to Mount Magazine, the highest mountain in Arkansas at 2,753 feet. At the top you’ll reach Mount Magazine State Park, a great place to stop and check out some of the expansive overlooks -- the Ouachita Mountains and Blue Mountain Lake are to the south, while the Ozark Mountains and Arkansas River Valley are to the north. If you’re feeling extra adventurous on your Sunday afternoon, you can take a park trail up to the peak of the mountain.
6. Talimena National Scenic Byway
Famous for its curvaceous roads and stunning panoramic views, this scenic drive travels 54 miles through the Ouachita National Forest along the crest of Winding Stair Mountain to the west and Rich Mountain to the east. There are a number of beautiful overlooks to check out along the way, such as the Panorama Vista in Oklahoma and the Grand View Vista in Arkansas. Also located along the route is the Queen Wilhelmina State Park, a popular destination for swimming, canoeing or hiking.
Next time you’re brainstorming ways to spend your Sunday afternoon, consider taking the Subaru BRZ on some of these spectacular drives. You won’t regret it!
