The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has been the authority on vehicle safety since it was established in 1959. For many years, a Top Safety Pick rating was the highest possible rating that the IIHS would award to a vehicle. Subaru vehicles are perennial Top Safety Pick winners, and every vehicle in the lineup has achieved that status for the last 6 years. However, in 2013, IIHS added an even higher safety rating, which takes crash prevention technology into account.

The Top Safety Pick Plus rating is now the highest safety rating awarded by the IIHS. To meet the criteria for a Top Safety Pick Plus rating, vehicles must meet all of the qualifications for a Top Safety Pick rating, plus an advanced or superior rating in front crash prevention. This is only possible when a vehicle is equipped with technology like Subaru EyeSight.

The 2016 WRX was recently awarded with a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS. The WRX earned the highest possible score in every category for crashworthiness as well as the highest possible score for front crash prevention when equipped with Subaru EyeSight. Small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats crash worthiness all were marked as “Good”, and front crash prevention earned a superior mark.

This year's WRX was the first model to earn a Top Safety Pick Plus rating since the redesign (the 2015 WRX merely earned a Top Safety Pick rating).  Even though the WRX is maybe one of the safest cars in its class, safety is typically not the biggest selling point on the WRX. As any rally fan will tell you, the WRX is known for its speed and off-road capabilities. So top marks in every safety category just comes as an added bonus.
