It's not very often that someone is on the brink of breaking a record that has stood for nearly three decades, and when it does happen, you're typically going to hear about it. The entire planet was suddenly a fan of horse races when American Pharoah won the Triple Crown earlier this year (although to be fair that record had an extra decade on it, and horses are far more majestic than people). However, if you know who David Higgins is, and you know what history he's in the process of making, you're most likely a die-hard rally fan.
If you are a rally fan, then you know all about Subaru Rally Team USA, and Subaru driver David Higgins. Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew have been absolutely dominant this year, winning event after event in the Rally America National Championship. The team has been driving a modified 2015 Subaru WRX STI to perfection. If the two can claim a win this weekend, they will be the first team since 1987 to wine very single event in the Rally America National Championship.
Higgins and Drew have conquered snow, mud, and the competition to claim seven victories out of seven events thus far. If the two can drive their WRX STI to a win at the Lake Superior Performance Rally this weekend, they will be the first team to enjoy a perfect season in almost 30 years.
The accomplishment is flying under the radar, but it's still an incredible feat. Records don't stand for 28 years if they're easily broken. Part of the reason that this record-breaking run isn't high profile is the relatively low popularity of rally in the U.S. Rally is huge oversees, but it's only recently started gaining popularity here in the United States. However, if Higgins and the 2015 WRX STI can break the 28 year-old rally record, there’s a good chance that we could see a spike in U.S. interest.
You, of course, have to acknowledge the incredible skill of the two drivers, but you their run wouldn't be possible without a great vehicle like a Subaru. Best of luck to Subaru Rally Team USA!
