Subaru owners tend to have a reputation for being… enthusiastically fond of their Subarus. But when you see a Subaru that's caked in mud, or loaded down with more cargo than it can handle, or you see a dog's happy face hanging out the window as it lathers the exterior in drool, you might feel as though that vehicle isn't being treated with the love you would expect to see. Don’t be fooled. Those people love their Subarus, and they understand that Subarus are meant to be used.

This classic Subaru commercial explains that "love-hate" relationship.

A Subaru isn't like some classic muscle car that’s kept covered, waxed, and polished, only to be unveiled on those rare and special occasions. Subarus are meant to be used to every day, and in every way. They're designed for carting kids to school on a bright and sunny day, and picking up groceries for dinner when winter weather sets in. They’re also designed to take your family camping, or haul your mountain bikes to a trail, or tote your boat to a river. If Subaru owners fretted over every little speck of dust, ding, or scratch, they would probably spend more time washing and buffing than driving.

It's a good thing that Subarus are designed to handle the adventurous and spirited driving habits of their owners. It was true when that commercial was made decades ago, and it's still true today; Subaru makes some of the most reliable vehicles on the road. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if some of those vehicles in that seemingly ancient footage were still running today.

As the commercial mentioned, what makes the longevity of Subaru vehicles so amazing is how long they keep running, even after being used so heavily. It’s one things if your vehicle runs for 15 or 20 years if you stick to paved roads and fair weather, but it’s an entirely different thing when your vehicle runs for a couple of decades after being battered, bruised, and put through its paces.
