Teenagers don't always make the best choices, and they have some special characteristics as drivers. Here are some safe driving tips that you can use to help remind your teen to make good driving decisions.

Buckle up. Wearing your seat belt keeps you safe in the event of an accident, and it's the law. Be sure to always fasten your seat belt.

Be sure that your mirrors are adjusted properly. This will make it easier to see the traffic around you. The more aware you are of your surroundings, the less likely you are to be in an accident.

Use turn signals. This is a good habit and helps let other drivers know what you're planning to do, so they can avoid being in the same place as you at the same time.

Keep music at a safe volume. We all love our tunes, but you need to be able to hear car horns and emergency vehicles. Keeping the volume low also makes it easier to focus on safe driving.

Avoid distractions. Talking on the phone should be discouraged, and texting should never be done while driving. Put your phone in your glove compartment or center console until you are safely parked. Wait on that snack or meal, too. 60% of teen crashes are caused by distraction.

Passengers are another big distraction for teenagers. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety did a study of 16 and 17 year old drivers and found that the risk of a fatal car accident increases by 44% when there's a teen passenger in the car with a teenage driver. Get three teens in a car, and the risk doubles. When friends are in the car, maintain focus on the road.

Driving while exhausted can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence. Make sure that you are alert and attentive before getting behind the wheel.

Follow traffic signs. They’'e not just friendly suggestions. Obey the speed limit. If a sign says no right turn on red, don't turn when the light is red. This will not only help prevent them you getting a ticket, but it will help keep you safe.

Choose a safe car for your teen. They don't necessarily need a brand new car, but they shouldn't be driving in a rolling death trap either. Working brakes, air bags, and steering are essential for ensuring your teen's safety.
