Setting goals is important. Goals help push you to do better and motivate you to succeed. But you can’t just kick back and celebrate your accomplishments whenever you meet your goals. You have to give yourself new goals. You have to set the bar a little higher in order to keep getting better, which is exactly why Subaru is setting sights a little higher, a little sooner.
Subaru has been enjoying a recent surge in popularity, although the company hasn’t changed much about the vehicles. Folks are fawning over the All-Wheel drive, Boxer engine, unrivaled longevity, and incredible safety that Subarus have to offer, but these are all features that Subaru has delivered for decades. This newfound popularity isn't unlike those movies where the geeky girl removes her glasses and everyone notices how beautiful she is. Nothing changes but the perception.
Seven straight years of record sales is a testament to the new appreciation for Subaru vehicles, and is the motivation for setting higher sales goals and increasing production.
Subaru sells a lot of vehicles in the United States and North America. In fact, this market makes up around 62% of Subaru’s overall sales, which is why the company is looking to increase manufacturing here in the states.
Subaru’s parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) sees potential to continue growing in the United States. In a report from Automotive News, FHI president Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said, "There are just not enough cars…If we only had more cars, we would be able to sell more."
Original plans would have seen production at the Subaru plant in Indiana increase to 400,000 vehicles by 2021; however, new plans aim to increase production to 394,000 by the end of next year.
Upping the production at the Indiana plant will allow Subaru to meet new sales goals. The company expects to sell 600,000 vehicles in the next year, which was the previous target number for 2021.
