Folks have been calling Subaru “odd” and “quirky” ever since they were first brought to the United States back in 1968. It’s not until recently that the general public have been won over by the amazing safety, performance, and overall design of Subaru vehicles, quieting those murmurs of “quirky”. However, because Subaru likes to do things a little differently, you still hear words like “unorthodox” and “unusual”.

People often think of the word different as being a bad thing. If something is different, it doesn't fit with what's normal, or it goes against the standard. But what's standard isn't always what is best. Words like different, unusual, and unorthodox shouldn't be viewed as negative. In many cases, different is better than what's normal.
Subaru has been called quirky, because it's different, but it’s those differences that keep Subaru fans loyal. For example, the fact that every Subaru vehicle (except for the BRZ) comes equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a little unusual. The almost obsessive commitment to safety might seem a little unorthodox to some. And there are probably people who find it odd that Subaru is practically the only manufacturer using a Boxer engine, and the only manufacturer that uses the Boxer engine exclusively in their entire lineup.
Most manufacturers duke it out to see who can make the most popular vehicle. Subaru on the other hand focuses on making great vehicles. It’s that dedication to quality that has helped Subaru grow in popularity. When the standard is making mediocre vehicles, different is exactly what you want.
Being different is what makes Subaru so great. There aren't many vehicle manufacturers out there that are as committed to building quality vehicles as Subaru. Until folks catch on, and making the best possible vehicle becomes the norm, Subaru will keep being different.
