Subaru of America Inc. has announced a recall on 81,000 Impreza model vehicles. The recall applies to Imprezas that were built between January 28th, 2003 and May 31st, 2005.

The 2004 Impreza and 2005 Impreza vehicles that are affected by this recall were equipped with faulty Takata air bag inflators.

If you recognize the name Takata, it’s probably because they have been all over the news recently. More and more vehicles continue to be recalled because they were equipped with Takata air bags. It’s been reported that the Takata recall is the largest in automotive history, with the total number of recalled vehicles now at 34 million.

A recall that affects air bags is concerning because air bags are mean to ensure passenger safety in the event of an accident. If the air bags are not working properly, you are at an increased risk of injury in a crash.

What makes this specific recall especially concerning is the fact that a feature that is meant for safety actually makes the vehicle less safe.  The faulty air bag inflator could essentially explode, sending metal shrapnel into the vehicle.

Subaru will, of course, contact all those who own a recalled vehicle. This recall should not go ignored. If you own one of the recalled Subaru Imprezas, it is extremely important that you schedule an appointment with a Subaru dealer. If you're in the Northwest Arkansas area, you can contact our Service Center to make an appointment. Call us at (888)-523-7266 or make an appointment online.

The faulty air bag inflator will be replaced at no cost.   Read the original recall report.
