Subaru sales in the United States have been more than impressive, but our neighbors to the north have developed a newfound appreciation for Subaru vehicles as well.

Subaru Canada Inc. announced this week that sales have increased significantly for the 8th consecutive month. We're not talking minimal hundredths place increases; we're talking big whopping full-fledged percentage points. This August they sold 3,691 units which is a 10.5 percent increase over last August. The overall number of units sold is up 15.8 percent from a year ago.

The 2015 Outback has been particularly instrumental in Canada’s Subaru success. In August there were 883 2015 Outbacks sold --  a staggering 74.9 percent increase.

As impressive as those numbers are, it's really not all that surprising that Subaru is doing so well up north.

Canada is a massive country with a beautiful and expansive wilderness. But, as we all know, the most beautiful landscapes can also be the hardest to traverse. The Rockies that we hold so dear here in U.S. don’t stop at the border. They extend another 900 miles through Canada without even needing a passport. Canada’s forests are thick and abundant. Over 50 percent of Canada’s land acreage is covered in forest.

Canada sits up pretty close to the North Pole with the northernmost point topping out at 75 degrees north. With that high latitude comes rough weather. Colder temperatures can lead to snow and ice that can make roads dangerous. Canada has a population density of about 8 people per square mile. That’s less than a tenth of the population density in the States, and a majority of the people in Canada live along the border. With people spread out and huge areas of wilderness, weather can end up being a pretty big deal.

So, Canada is home to rough terrain, harsh weather conditions, and has a low population density. That makes Subaru the ideal vehicle for that environment. They're all wheel drive, extremely safe, and extremely reliable. It's no wonder Subaru is such a popular choice!
