Every state has at least a special tree, bird, and flower that they claim as their own. For example, the state tree of Arkansas is the pine tree (pinus taeda), our state bird is the northern mockingbird, and our state flower is the apple blossom. Sometimes state symbols are chosen for historical reasons, and sometimes they’re decided by abundance. The latter is why you hear Subaru jokingly referred to as the state car of Colorado.
Colorado doesn’t actually have an official state car, but should they decide to choose one, Subaru would be a more than fitting choice for the Silver State.
If you’ve ever spent time in Colorado, you probably can’t remember a time you were driving and didn’t spot a Subaru. While Subaru vehicles are gaining popularity world and nation wide, they have been popular in the Centennial State for quite some time. It’s really a no-brainer when you stop to consider why Subaru has such a strong presence in Colorado.
Outdoor recreation is a huge industry in Colorado. In 2011 the state welcomed 57.9 million visitors and in 2010 the state received $14.6 billion from tourist spending. Those are pretty big numbers, and that doesn’t even take residents into consideration. Subaru is the go-to vehicle for people who love the outdoors.
Part of the reason outdoor enthusiasts love Subaru is because they make vehicles that can go anywhere. In a state like Colorado, a car that can go anywhere is nearly a necessity. While half of the state is rolling plains, the other half of the state is a playground of towering mountains, carved canyons, and winding rivers. There are 53 mountains over 14,000 feet tall in the state of Colorado. Driving through those mountain passes can be treacherous, especially when the snow starts falling.
Another reason you find so many Subaru vehicles in Colorado is because of the weather. Some of the mountain towns can get over 200 inches of snowfall in a year. Even towns on the Front Range can expect to see over 50 inches of snow. Winter weather can lead to accidents and injuries. All Subarus come standard with all wheel drive that makes them a safer option on snowy or icy roads.
It makes a lot of sense for people to call Subaru the unofficial state car of Colorado. They are perfectly suited for the state which is why you see them driving around everywhere. Then again, Subarus are perfectly suited for every state!
