Where would you expect accidents to happen? You might expect to see them on the interstate where cars are driving at high speeds for long periods of time. Demolition derbies would be a safe bet. Also, anywhere that post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-type road gangs roam the wasteland should be avoided. There are lots of places where people expect to see accidents, so they make a point to be cautious in those areas. However, people often underestimate the potential for accidents in a parking lot.
Parking lots aren’t the most obvious place for an accident. When you think about it, most people are slowly driving around a bunch of parked cars. What could possibly go wrong? It’s that sense of security that often makes people less careful in parking lots.
You won’t necessarily see high impact crashes in parking lots, but fender benders aren’t that uncommon. You might have one driver who is checking her phone as she pulls up to a store and another driver who is organizing the items he just purchased. Neither one of the drivers is paying attention and so they end up colliding. Parking lots can often be more unpredictable than any place else you drive because people end up being more distracted.
To limit your chance of getting in an accident in a parking lot, you should exercise the same amount of caution you do when you drive anywhere else. Make sure your seatbelt is buckled before leaving your parking space and be sure to keep an eye out for other drivers. You might even want to drive more cautiously than you normally would. Let other drivers go ahead of you especially if it seems like they aren’t paying attention.
If you get in a wreck on the road, you’ve got to be thankful to walk away from it in one piece. If you end up doing hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of damage to your car by driving three miles an hour in a parking lot while texting, you walk away feeling like a goober. Don’t be a goober, be safe in parking lots!
