There's not enough color on the roads today. It's pretty rare to see a vehicle that's painted a bold or exciting color unless it's a school bus or a fire truck.  Most of the cars you see driving around will be white or black or some shade in between. These were the ten most popular car colors sold in North America last year:

1.      White (23%)

2.      Black (19%)

3.      Silver (16%)

4.      Gray (15%)

5.      Red (10%)

6.      Blue (7%)

7.      Brown/Beige (5%)

8.      Yellow/Gold (2%)

9.      Green (2%)

10.   Other (1%)

The first four colors on the list combine to make up 73%. That means almost three out of every four cars sold last year were either white, black, silver, or gray.

Red is the only other color that makes it into double-digit percentage points, but even then it's not the fire or cherry reds from years ago, it's a sophisticated maroon. The reds, blues, and greens that you see on the road are usually pretty modest.

There’s nothing wrong with having a humbly colored car, they just don’t grab your attention, which might just be the point. Many car buyers want to steer clear of colors that will get them extra attention from either vandals, thieves, or radar gun wielding lawmen.

Despite what the numbers show, many think that the trend of buying a car that blends in is coming to an end, and people will be more willing to buy a car that lets them stand out. Soon, we might see more canary colored two-seaters or purple tinted vans.

Subaru seems to be a bit ahead of the curve with the color options offered for the 2015 XV Crosstrek.  While it is offered in the ever-popular Satin White Pearl (white) and Crystal Black Silica (black), the XV Crosstrek also comes in head turning Tangerine Orange Pearl and Plasma Green.

While there hasn't been any conclusive data on the matter, many believe that brighter, bolder colors are actually safer than your run-of-the-mill colors. The logic behind it is that folks will be quicker to spot unusual colors than the colors they see everyday. Either way, it would be great to see some color back on the roads!
