Summer and road trips go hand in hand. Trunks packed to the brim and luggage strapped on racks. Missed turns, wrong turns, and lots of fun. Some folks are long-haulers who like to knock out the driving and get to where they’re going. Others like to cruise and go wherever the wind takes them. Whether your approach is efficient or leisurely, making preparations for your trip is always a good idea.
Those “10-minute” rest stops that are really 30-minute rest stops can add up quickly. To cut down on unnecessary stopping, try bringing food and beverages with you. Sandwiches pack easily and keep well in a cooler. Jerky, nuts, and pretzels will all hold up well in the car and make for delicious and welcomed snacking. Fruit is refreshing and will help you stay focused on those long stretches of road (just be sure to bring a trash bag for peels, cores, etc.).
Staying hydrated is crucial and water is the reigning champ in that department. Bringing reusable water bottles is a good way to keep water with you at all times and save money on your trip. A water bottle for each cup holder is a good rule of thumb. After all, even if you like making stops, you can't be sure that the roadside attractions that catch your eye will also offer healthy hydration.
There are some people who love the idea of making it to their destination in record time, and then there are those who see no difference between 3 hours in a car and torture. For the latter, going with the flow is the name of the game. They want to stop and see every quirky local museum, read all the historical markers, and tour every factory that will let them in. If you're in this group, spend a little time in research before you go so you'll have some ideas about what to watch for. While it seems contradictory to prepare not to have plans, doing so can help make your road trip even better.
Bring a camera to capture every odd attraction and silly photo-op. Carry a journal to write down all the names of the places you visit -- or drive by -- that you would love to see again. Bring travel games and maybe a ball to kick or throw when you find an open space. Whether you travel fast or pack in as many adventures per mile as you can, you'll enjoy revisiting and sharing the memories later.
