Dogs and Subarus just naturally go together. Take these ten top tips to heart to make sure your dog enjoys the ride in safety.
  1. If your dog hasn't been in a car before, don't start with a road trip. Most dogs love going for a ride in a car, but it's smart tyo take a few trips to the park before setting out on a major journey.
  2. We said trips to the park because you don't want your dog to associate car travel with scary things. Unless your dog loves going to the vet, make sure that's not the only travel you do before heading out on a road trip with your pooch.
  3. Let your dog eat lightly a few hours before travel.
  4. Right before you go, get out for a good long walk. You and the dog will be more comfortable if you get some movement before the Subaru gets moving.
  5. Tag your dog with your cell phone number and full info about where you live and where you're staying while traveling. If you get separated, you want it to be easy for strangers to help reunite you.
  6. Don't let your dog put his head out the window. Lots of dogs love to do this, but the airflow can irritate his eyes and nose, and it's not a safe choice.
  7. Don't let your dog roam the car, either, especially if he likes to come up and climb in your lap. A restraining pet harness or doggy car seat is a help.
  8. In fact, your dog is better off in a crate, especially on a long trip. It's safer for you and for your four-footed friend. If you had to make a sudden stop, your beloved dog could be launched into the air, and you should remember from physics lessons what happens next.
  9. Stop for water and bathroom breaks, maybe more often than you would if you were traveling on your own.
  10. Never leave your dog in a parked car. No excuses.
