Adventures often stretch out for more than a day. Sleeping under the stars can be wonderful, but sometimes -- we're thinking about rainy weather, voracious mosquitoes, bears -- camping in your Subaru is even better.

Subaru Drive Magazine has an article on the subject in the current issue. They remind us not to run the car's engine while we sleep. For safety's sake, that's an important reminder.

If you know you'll be sleeping in your car, just lower the rear seatbacks and put in air mattresses. Pack the rest of your stuff with a thought about how easy it will be to move it when night comes. Subaru's cargo compartment is designed to hold plenty of gear, but planning with sleep in mind is better than trying to stretch out on top of your luggage.

In fact, if rain change your plans, it's worth taking the time to unpack, create a sleeping platform, and lay out your sleeping bags. It might not seem worthwhile in the middle of the night, but the next day, when you either had a good night's sleep or are grouchy and bleary-eyed, you'll notice the difference.

If you're planning to sleep in your Subaru, stop for the night before it becomes completely dark so you can arrange your cabin for comfort. E-readers with lights let you read before you sleep, but you can also tell ghost stories without worrying about getting too scared -- unlike your tent, your Subaru has locks.
