Can the Hybrid Crosstrek XV really take on tough terrain and keep on going? To find out for sure, Subaru took a number of auto reviewers to Iceland in November.
Iceland's terrain is mountainous, rocky, extremely windy,
and of course, snowy. The trip was originally planned for September but
logistical issues got in the way. Two days before the reviewers were due to
arrive, Iceland got their first winter snowstorm of the year. Winds of up to ninety
miles an hour, murky streams of frozen slush, and volcanic rock roads challenged the Crosstrek.
Drivers in Iceland usually choose much, much
bigger off-road vehicles outfitted with special extreme winter weather tools,
like plows, chains, snorkels for river crossings, and other extreme gear. When compared
to the Crosstrek, they look like monsters at a truck rally, ready to crush
unsuspecting cars. These were the lead vehicles that took the stalwart Crosstreks through Iceland from the capital city to a mountain hostel and back.
Even the roads in Reykjavik were in far worse condition than some of the worst
conditions you’ll find stateside.
