The General Lee might be the ideal car for bursting through barn doors, evading the police, and ramping over bridges, but it's not really a suitable family car. The Subaru Outback on the other hand has a long-standing reputation as being great for families. So what makes the Outback such a great family vehicle?

You're going to be hauling around precious cargo, so you need a family vehicle that is safe. The Outback is a perennial top safety vehicle for both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Traction control features mean you won't be able wildly whip around corners like the General Lee, but they do insure a safe ride.

A family vehicle should fit the entire family comfortably. You might spend an entire Saturday running to-and-fro from practices to errands and back, or hitting the highway on a coast-to-coast summer vacation. The Subaru Outback offers plenty of comfort and legroom without the chasm of space between the front and back seats that plagues minivans.

You want plenty of room in a family vehicle, and not only for family members. You need something with enough cargo space to tote plenty of groceries and everyone's camping gear. You won't want for room with the Outback's capacious trunk space, and folding back seats allow you to haul those bigger items without worry.

Families can be expensive; you want a vehicle that doesn't unexpectedly add to the expenses by needing constant repairs. Subaru vehicles have a reputation for reliability, and the Outback is no exception. Save that money you would have spent on repairs and put it towards piano lessons.

Outbacks are known to run for decades. It's a great feeling knowing that you will have a dependable vehicle for years and years, but it's also good to know that you will have a reliable first car for any future drivers in your family. The fact that you can pass an Outback down to your kids makes it a truly great family car.
