Students around the country are getting ready to crack the books and head to college. Some will be returning for their final semester while others will be attending their first. Whether it's their first semester, last semester, or somewhere in between, college students have reason to be excited: meeting new friends or reuniting with old ones, advancing in education, and making steps towards a career. If you're a parent you want to make sure your child has everything they need to succeed in school, and get them on track to the next part of their life. They've got their books -- now do they need a car?
Today most of the big universities have everything your son or daughter needs on campus: banks, grocery stores, bookstores, computer labs, and a place to get a haircut. If your student lives on campus, they may be able to fill their basic needs without leaving the campus.
But that doesn’t mean that they will want to stay on campus for everything. Going away to school -- even if it's just the other side of town -- is a chance to gain independence and to try out new experiences. If your student is at the University of Arkansas, you won't want him or her to miss visiting Crystal Bridges or Beaver Lake, and every other college has its own special adventures and opportunities. A car lets your students explore the town that they are in, or the natural beauty outside their town.
Smaller colleges might not have everything that your child needs. Attending church, picking up favorite foods the cafeteria doesn't supply, shopping for something special, picking up some pocket money by babysitting -- ordinary activities can become complicated for students who don't have a car. Some cities have public transportation, but what if that doesn’t work with your child’s class schedule?
If your child has a car, you won’t have to wonder whether or not he or she is able to get groceries, or make it to work on time.
It’s hard to see your kid go to another city or state for college. You are of course happy for them and excited that they are making another step towards adulthood, but at the same time sad to see them go. If they have a vehicle, they will have a means to make trips back home, so you can still see them regularly. The safety and reliability of a Subaru will help you feel confident about those trips.
While the learning done in the classroom is of course a big part of a college education, the learning done outside of the classroom is equally important. Your child will learn life skills and lessons that shape who they are as an adult. Having a car helps them get to adventures!
