On certain days of the year, amateur drivers get to take a spin around the famous Nurburgring motorsports complex's road race track called Nordschleife. The  "Touristenfahrten," or tourist trip, lets any licensed driver live out speed racer fantasies.

This year, one Subaru driver took a turn far too quickly and ended up crashing into a barrier at a high speed. Drivers reach terminal speeds on straight portions of the track, often getting close to 200 miles per hour in even your everyday average track car. In all likelihood, this driver crashed into the barrier going over 80 or 90 miles per hour. Because he was driving a Subaru, he was unharmed and walked away from the crash. Subarus are built using top safety specifications so they're as safe as possible. While this Subaru in this particular instance is older, it was still an extremely safe car to crash in -- if this driver had owned another make, the story might have ended very differently.

Today's Subarus are even safer. As safety tesst have become more stringent, Subarus have kept pace with the changes.   All of Subaru's models are top safety picks from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the toughest testing agency in the United States.

In frontal crashes, the engine can be thrown into the passenger compartment. Engines can cause severe injury to drivers and passengers. Subaru's Boxer engine, however, sits as low as possible and when the car experiences a frontal crash, the engine is pushed downwards and away from occupants. Instead of being propelled inside the car, it falls to the ground.

Subarus are designed around the occupants. The occupant compartment is made up of a shape that acts as a natural reinforcement. That's why Subarus have such a distinctive shape.
