We've got some more details about the new Subaru Hybrid XV
Crosstrek that were released late last week at the New York Auto Show. While
you can expect some increases in gas mileage and some cool new features, we're
still waiting to hear a MSRP for the new model. We do expect to see our first
models rolling onto the lot later this year!
The big change is the 100-volt, 13.5-kilowatt nickel-metal hydride battery that's
tucked in the back of the car. The engine is still the same robust 2.0-liter
four-cylinder Boxer engine available in the gas-only XV Crosstrek models. The
new battery, however, allows the Hybrid XV Crosstrek to get 28 mpg in the city,
34 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg combined, an improvement from the gas-only by
about ten percent.
Another
energy saving features include a smarter heating and cooling system that
closely monitors the conditions inside the car that turns on only when it's
needed. The object is to tax the engine for consumption as little as possible
for activities outside of driving. There's also an active shutter system for
the grille to improve aerodynamics to cut down on mpg-killing drag. And you'll
see similar traditional stop/start features found on other hybrids for when the
Crosstrek comes to a stop to save energy as well as a regenerative breaking
system to recharge the battery.
All
these features come at a very minimal loss of cargo space at only 1.7 cubic
feet difference between the conventional Crosstrek that comes in at 51.9 cubic
feet versus the 50.2 cubic feet on the Hybrid model. You'll still have plenty
of room for your gear and four-legged friends all while being more economical
and environmentally friendly.
We
can't wait to take it out for a test drive!
