When you take your dog with you everywhere, you need to consider that dog when you make your car shopping choices. Here are some of the points to think about:
  • The size of the dog or dogs is of course primary. You have to make sure that the vehicle you choose has room for your dog. Room, that is, in the place where you want your dog to sit. Most any dog can fit on the back seat.
  • Consider the dog's activity level as well. A laid-back dog who's happy in a pet carrier has different needs from the lively dog who likes to leap from back to front.
  • Related to the dog's activity level is the kind of activity you plan on having with the dog. Sedate walks in the park make for easier cleanup than dogs who like to run through the mud and wallow in the creek.
  • When you think of cleanup, make sure the upholstery on the car is easy to wipe down, and that the windows are either above noseprint level or easy to reach with a cleaning cloth. Match upholstery to your dog if you've got a shedder -- you can vacuum less often.
  • If your dog roams free in the car, your seat covers need to fit well and not be designed to encourage digging. If you use a crate, a carrier, a bed, or a dog hammock, bring it along when you car shop and test the fit.
