Subaru drivers tend to be active people. That "My other car is a bike" bumper sticker is probably telling it like it is.

So what's the best way to transport your bike when you're heading out in your Subaru?

Your best choice, naturally, is a genuine Subaru bike rack. There's a bed-mounted rack for the Baja, and roof-mounted options for most of the newer models, including the Crosstrek.

Some cyclists don't like the roof rack idea, either because they find it hard to get the bikes on and off (smaller people, often including women, can find this a concern) or because they feel that their bikes may be too exposed on the roof.

In fact, the back-mounted strap type of bike carrier is less stable and secure, even if you use it correctly -- which many drivers don't.

It's true that bikes on the roof will affect your gas mileage slightly.

For many models of Subaru, it's just as easy to load bikes into the back. Remove the wheel and cushion the bikes with a moving blanket, especially if you're toting several bikes.
