2019 Subaru Ascent vs. Toyota Highlander | Adventure Subaru

When you're in the market for a new vehicle, there is a lot to consider. You might have a general idea of what you want the car to look like or which features you know you want, but that will only get you so far. Let's say you want to find a family vehicle that can comfortably fit all your kids, pets and luggage. That's a great start! But once you narrow it down to vehicles that fit that bill, things start to get a little muddled. Don't let yourself be overwhelmed by that - Adventure Subaru is here to help. If you're in need of a family SUV, whether you're a loyal Subaru fanatic or you've never even been inside one, check out our comparison of the 2019 Subaru Ascent vs. the Toyota Highlander. We'll fill you in on everything you need to know to make the right decision.

Capable Design

When you look at the overall design of both the 2019 Subaru Forester and the Toyota Highlander, it doesn't take long to see that Subaru has this one in the bag. The Ascent has a fantastic design from the inside out, with lots of little benefits that really start to add up. For example, the 2019 Ascent comes standard with roof rails, which is more than we can say for the Toyota Highlander. That makes the versatile interior space even more significant, and it doesn't cost you any extra.

For the Highlander, you're going to have to purchase an upgrade if you want that kind of convenience. Plus, the Ascent offers a whopping 8.7 inches of ground clearance. That means you can tackle pretty much any kind of terrain your journey throws at you. The Highlander might have fairly impressive ground clearance when it stands alone, but next to the 2019 Ascent, it just can't compare.

Preferred Performance

If performance is something that's important to you, there's only one clear answer. In that department, the 2019 Subaru Ascent is second to none. That's partly due to the fact that the Ascent comes standard with the Subaru Boxer engine, which puts out an incredible 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Pretty impressive, right?

The Highlander, on the other hand, isn't quite as impressive. The Toyota puts out 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque with its standard engine. You can get an upgrade, but you'll be paying for it - and it still won't measure up to the power of the 2019 Subaru Ascent.

Safe & Sound

When you're looking for a vehicle to haul your family around, you have to make safety a priority. For years, Subaru has been a leader in the auto industry for advanced safety technology. The 2019 Ascent will come standard with a number of safety features, including Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Subaru EyeSight. EyeSight encompasses Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Braking and Pre-Collision Throttle management. It will also come standard with a rearview camera, so you really can have eyes in the back of your head. The Ascent will also offer a number of optional safety features like Blind Spot Detection, Rear Traffic Alert and Reverse Automatic Braking. Oh, and let's not forget about the Subaru STARLINK safety and security services.

If there's one brand you can trust when it comes to safety, it's Subaru. You can have confidence in your Subie, because you know the Ascent comes with all the best safety features without requiring upgrades or charging extra fees. If you want some features like All-Wheel Drive in the Highlander, you have to specifically ask about it and pay extra for it. Not only do you get it standard in the Ascent, but you get Subaru's Symmetrical AWD, which is already a huge step ahead of the other guys.
