2019 Subaru Ascent vs. Honda Pilot | Adventure Subaru

When you're searching for the right vehicle for you and your family, you have to take a lot of things into consideration. You probably have a pretty good idea of some basic things you need, like size and cargo capacity. Maybe capability is a big deal for you, or perhaps safety is your main focus. These are all great things to know, but it has to go even deeper than that. Even if you know you want a mid-sized crossover that can seat the whole family and keep them as safe as possible on the road, you might find multiple vehicles that meet those requirements. Instead of getting overwhelmed by your options, let Adventure Subaru help you out. Take a look at our comparison of the 2019 Subaru Ascent vs. the Honda Pilot below.

Design

When it comes to design, the 2019 Subaru Ascent certainly stands out. That's just one of the many areas it excels in, and it's not hard to see why. The Ascent is carefully and brilliantly designed from the inside out, offering not only a pleasing aesthetic, but lots of little clever and delightful additions. The 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with roof rails, for starters, which is not the case for the 2018 Honda Pilot. The Pilot offers roof rails as an available upgrade, but you'll have to shell out some extra cash.

The Ascent also offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is more than an inch higher than the Pilot. In fact, the Ascent is bigger than the Pilot in every direction - length, width and height. This is reflected on the inside as well, as the Ascent offers more leg room and a bigger cargo area than the Pilot. As a bonus, you'll find a total of 19 cupholders in this Subie - so rest assured, hydration will never be an issue.

Performance

If you're looking for a midsize crossover than can carry 8 people and promise exceptional performance, there's only one vehicle that can meet your expectations. When it comes to performance, the 2019 Subaru Ascent comes out on top. First of all, the Ascent comes with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which gives you amazing versatility and off-road capability. It also offers both a turbo and a boxer engine, which puts out some very impressive torque. The Ascent pulls more like a sports car and gets better combined fuel economy with 20 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway.

The 2018 Honda Pilot, on the other hand, does not offer a boxer engine like the Ascent does. It also only offers All-Wheel Drive as an available upgrade rather than a standard feature. You can count on the Pilot's torque being inferior to that of the Ascent, and you'll have to pay extra to get its performance even close to the Ascent's-but even then, it won't quite measure up.

Safety

When you're shopping for a vehicle to haul around not just you, but your entire family as well, safety naturally has to be one of the biggest requirements on your list. If you know anything about Subaru, you probably know where this is going. Subaru has been a leader in the auto industry for advanced safety technology for some time now, and the 2019 Ascent is one of the safest vehicles out there. The Subie comes standard with Subaru Eyesight Driver Assist Technology. This advanced system combines a number of features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Braking and Pre-Collision Throttle Management.

Some similar driver assist features are available on higher trim levels of the 2018 Honda Pilot, but the lowest two trims don't even have it as an option. That means that unless you're willing to go big and spend the money on one of the top-level Pilots, you won't be able to promise your family the protection they deserve. With Subaru, safety is never an option.
